1: Submit an outline & and get accepted
1. How do I become a speaker at an ESOMAR event?
Start by checking out www.esomar.org/events to see which events we’re organising. If an event is open for speaking proposals, you should be able to submit your ideas through an online submission form under the Topics / Call for Speakers tab. Information on general requirements, a copyright clause, selection policy and registration fee policies are provided within the form. It is recommended to review some of the tips and tricks below before proceeding to a submission form.
This subscription will allow you to select your areas of interest so that you will be notified when a Call for Speakers for a specific event is launched.
You can also subscribe to newsletters (check the events box!) to hear when we’re looking for speakers.
2. Do I need to abide by the ICC/ESOMAR Code in order to present at an event?
Yes, any person presenting or showcasing at an ESOMAR event is asked to confirm that they abide by the ICC/ESOMAR Code. You will be asked to confirm this before submitting the outline form. Only then can your proposal be fully approved by the event programme committee.
3. Do I need to be an ESOMAR member to be accepted?
No, it is not required to be an ESOMAR member when speaking. However, ESOMAR members are highlighted as such in the event programme. Being an ESOMAR member signifies a commitment to the highest standards of ethical practice and integrity, and can add weight to your presentation.
Becoming an ESOMAR member allows you access to the people, information and tools needed to address business critical issues and grow your company. Membership also provides preferential rates for all ESOMAR events and publications. To find out more about joining ESOMAR, contact membership@esomar.org or visit esomar.org/community/join-esomar.
4. Do I have to write a full paper?
Yes – unless otherwise specified.
As a benefit for ESOMAR members and event attendees, as well as an industry reference and to give your ideas further exposure and longevity, ESOMAR publishes the work presented by speakers at our events. Depending on the event, the best written piece will win the event's Best Paper Award and/or will be eligible for the annual ESOMAR Best Paper of the Year Award.
More than 70 years of ESOMAR content, including papers, reports, presentation recordings, webinar recordings, etc. can be found in our digital resources libary, powered by ANA.

5. Are there any guidelines for writing a document?
Please download the Guidelines for Contributors PDF (287 Kb) before submitting your written document.
Once you have reviewed the guidelines, you can also download the following award winning paper as a sample:
(Wo)man VS. machine: From competition to collaboration (ESOMAR Global Qualitative 2017)
6. As an ESOMAR speaker do I need to register online for the event?
No – unless otherwise specified.
If your outline is accepted by ESOMAR/Programme Committee, our events team will register you. In special cases, the team will let you know if you need to do this yourself, using a provided code.
If you have submitted with multiple authors, we will need to know who will attend and who will present (max. two presenters) and if an invoice needs to be created. See point 7 - What is the registration policy for co-presenters?.
7. What is the registration policy for co-presenters?
Speakers' policy refers to presenters on stage (maximum two). Please note, ESOMAR will register all speakers/presenters.
- If you are presenting alone, your registration fee is waived.
- If both presenters are from a research agency, ESOMAR will waive only one fee.
- If you are presenting a research client-provider paper, ESOMAR will waive the registration fee of one provider and one client (so both fees are waived).
- If both presenters are clients* both will be waived.
* A client is defined as any individual or organisation that requests, commissions or subscribes to all or any part of a market research project. (ICC/ESOMAR Code definition). A client is not someone who sells research or consults.
Paying authors/speaker are always registered with Early Bird fee.
Of course all the other authors, who are not presenting, are welcome to attend and will receive the invoice if they will express a wish to be registered.
8. Am I responsible for booking my own transportation and accommodation?
Yes. Except for exceptional circumstances, delegates and speakers are responsible for booking their own transportation and accommodation for the event. To help defray the cost of attending an event, ESOMAR generally negotiates special reduced fees for our delegates (speakers included) staying at the event venue.
A booking form (or link) is featured online, on the location page of each global & regional event. It is the speaker’s/delegate’s responsibility to reserve discounted accommodation before the reduced fee room passes.
9. Does ESOMAR have any guidelines for creating presentations?
ESOMAR encourages lively and impactful presentations to ensure that the speakers engage and inspire the audience raising the quality of the event. Please download the guidelines for presentations (254 Kb).
YES Award candidate? Be original. Be bold. And be ready with one 60-second pitch (slides or no slides) and one pecha kucha with 20 slides at 20-seconds-per-slide.
The screen ratio used for ESOMAR events is 16:9. Allotted speaking time is generally 20 minutes but can vary from 15 minutes (capsule) to 60 minutes (interactive, hands-on). The event's Programme Manager will confirm this with you.
The video below might also provide some guidance to help you to create amazing presentations.
ESOMAR has also prepared a list of handy recommendations for presenting on the day.
10. What is the best way to ensure success with my presentations?
Make sure your presentation is set up in a 16:9 format, as the screen will be set for these dimensions. Newer PowerPoint versions have this as a standard template. Please note, that if you are using a 4-3 slide set up there will be two black bars on the side of the screen.
When sending the PowerPoint presentation to ESOMAR with movies, make sure the presentation and the movie files are stored in the same folder. Movies are NOT embedded in your presentation so by keeping them together in one folder the links will stay intact (the same goes for audio files).
For sending the presentation over to us, please be sure to “zip” the folder. Very likely the folder will be too big send via regular email, so use a standard digital file delivery service like YouSendIt.com or Dropbox for sending. Please notify the Programme Manager when doing this so that they will be alerted to look for your email.
Here are some technical tips you may find useful.
Please see also point 9 - Does ESOMAR have any guidelines for creating presentations?
11. Are ESOMAR speakers rated by the event attendees?
Yes – to celebrate the most inspiring, effective and professional presenters at an ESOMAR event, we ask the attendees to rate the speakers and their presentations. Based on the votes (done through the ESOMAR Events app - available for Apple & Android), we are thrilled to honour the highest-rated speaker(s) with the Best Presentation Award – often awarded during the closing session.
12. How can I promote my participation to the event?
Some ideas:
- Add the digital banner received from your project manager to your email signature and/or share alongside a quick note in an internal newsletter or on your website. Please be sure to hyperlink with the event page.
- Use emails, newsletters, press releases, web calendars
- Record a video for us to include on the ESOMAR website, in email campaigns and/or for your own communications
- Reach out to contacts through any of your and/or your company’s social media channels…
Social media:
- Twitter – all about the short and sweet – post the video you recorded, a funny gif or photo, and tell everyone why you’re excited for the event. Just be sure to include @ESOMAR when posting
- LinkedIn – storytelling, . Ask some questions at the end, provoking people to reply. Remember to include @ESOMAR
- ESOMAR also uses:
Instagram: @esomar_hq
Facebook: @esomar
YouTube: #esomar
Where applicable, follow ESOMAR and like/love/share/re-post/re-tweet our messages. The more contacts and networks reached, the more delegates and greater audience to connect with at the event!
BONUS: we’re happy to offer great discounts for groups of three (or more!) wanting to join AND/OR for those 30 and younger.
13. Do I have to attend a speaker’s rehearsal?
Yes – in order to give our speakers and delegates the best possible experience, we organise a compulsory speaker rehearsal, often the day before the event starts.
This rehearsal enables speakers to see each other’s presentations, to think about the questions they would like to be asked during their session’s Q&A and to familiarise themselves with the audio-visual equipment (a technician will be present).
The event's Programme Manager will communicate the rehearsal schedule before the event so speakers can plan accordingly.
The meeting should last approximately 30 minutes and is focused on the technical side; the AV, choreography and Q&A will be discussed.
A pre-event conference call may also be organized with the speaker and the session chair to ensure the content direction of the final presentation.
14. Can I get the presentation (besides the papers) after the event takes place?
No. The conference presentations are imbedded into the conference video recordings and we do not provide them separately.
However, all video recordings and conference papers are available in our digital library ANA for ESOMAR Members. For more information about Membership benefits please visit our membership pages or contact our membership team at membership@esomar.org.
15. Is it possible for a speaker to become an event sponsor?
Yes – if the speaker has already been selected by ESOMAR and the Programme Committee based on the quality of their submission, the speaker is free to contact our Business Development Team via business@esomar.org to explore the various options to promote their company and business needs.
If you didn’t submit or weren’t selected – but are still interested – we also provide a handful of sponsored speaking slots. Please contact business@esomar.org for more details.
