Background information

Biography:
Dr. Ijaz Shafi Gilani received his doctorate in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977. Thereafter he taught in the Department of International Relations, Quaid-I-Azam University for ten years (1977-1987). He also served as Chairman of the Department of International Relations (1980-81). During 2004-2007 Dr. Gilani served as Professor and Dean of the Faculties of Social Sciences and Management Sciences at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).

Currently Dr. Gilani heads Gallup Pakistan which specializes in opinion and social science research. He is also global Vice President of Gallup International and heads its world-wide Group of Experts on Opinion and Social Research.

From 1991-93, he served as adviser to the Prime Minister and was Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Committee for Research and Analysis, an in-house think tank which he set up at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Dr. Gilani has headed a number of research projects in the field of social and economic development, strategic studies and political behaviour. He served as Project Director at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (1979-81), and co-chaired the crisis and conflict Analysis Team at the Institute of Strategic Studies (1984-93). He has formerly served as Research Adviser to the National Defence College, Senior Fellow at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics Islamabad and member of the Board of Governors of Bahria University. Currently he is a member of the Board of Governors of Foundation University and University of Management and Technology (UMT).

Dr. Gilani has published on a wide range of subjects. He has lectured in various Universities and other institutions of higher learning, such as the National Defence College, National Institute of Public Administration, Administrative Staff College and the Institute of Strategic Studies. He has travelled abroad widely for participating in academic conferences and delivering lectures in different parts of the world.
